1st month pregnancy diet chart

In the first month, your body is preparing for and beginning a pregnancy, often before you even know about it. You do not need extra calories yet. What matters most is folate (with a folic acid supplement), steady meals, and removing the few things known to harm early development, such as alcohol and smoking.

Indian kitchens already hold most of what this month needs. A bowl of dal, a green sabzi and a roti cover folate, iron and protein; the supplement fills the gap food cannot. If you have diabetes, thyroid disease, epilepsy or a high BMI, ask your doctor early, because some women need a higher folic acid dose.

Nutrients to focus on in month 1

  • Folate and folic acid: Supports the neural tube, which forms in the first weeks. The NHS and WHO advise a 400 microgram folic acid supplement daily until 12 weeks; food alone is not enough.
  • Iron: Builds your blood stores early, since many Indian women start pregnancy with low haemoglobin.
  • Hydration: Good fluid intake helps with early tiredness and constipation.

Indian foods to eat this month

  • Palak, methi, sarson and other dark greens — Natural folate, plus iron and fibre.
  • Chana, moong, rajma and masoor — Folate, protein and iron in one bowl.
  • Oranges, mosambi and amla — Vitamin C, which helps iron absorption.
  • Whole grains such as atta, bajra and jowar — Steady energy and B vitamins.
  • Curd and milk — Calcium and protein for your own bones.

What to avoid or limit

  • Alcohol in any amount — there is no known safe level
  • Smoking, including second-hand smoke and chewing tobacco
  • More than 200 mg caffeine a day (about two cups of instant coffee)
  • Unprescribed herbal remedies and 'garam' home mixtures meant to bring on a period

1st month diet: common questions

Do I need to eat more in the 1st month of pregnancy?

No. Extra energy needs only begin in the second trimester. Focus on quality — folate, iron and protein — rather than quantity.

Can I drink tea or coffee in the 1st month?

In moderation. The NHS advises no more than 200 mg of caffeine a day, roughly two mugs of tea and one of instant coffee.

Is papaya unsafe in early pregnancy?

Unripe or semi-ripe papaya is commonly avoided because of its latex. Fully ripe papaya in small amounts is considered acceptable by many doctors; ask yours if unsure.
