Meaning

Cleansing the mirror of my mind with the dust of my guru's feet, I sing the pure glory of Rama. Knowing myself to be without wisdom, I remember Hanuman, son of the wind — grant me strength, intelligence and learning, and remove my troubles and faults.

The Hanuman Chalisa is a 40-verse (chalisa) hymn in Awadhi, attributed to the 16th-century poet-saint Tulsidas. After two opening dohas asking for strength, wisdom and learning, the verses praise Hanuman's devotion to Rama, his courage in finding Sita and bringing the healing herb for Lakshmana, his humility and his power to remove fear and obstacles. It closes with a doha asking Hanuman to dwell in the heart with Rama, Lakshmana and Sita. We show the opening dohas, the first chaupais and the closing doha here; the full public-domain text is widely available in printed Chalisa booklets.

When and how to chant in pregnancy

Many mothers recite or listen to it on Tuesdays and Saturdays, or any evening when they want to feel brave. A full recitation takes about 8–10 minutes; listening to a calm recording is just as valid on tired days. Sit comfortably, keep your voice soft, and let the exhale be long. Comfort matters more than the count — stop if you feel breathless.
