Mantras for a calm mind in pregnancy

Pregnancy can bring big feelings. Slow chanting lengthens the out-breath, which many people find settles the body and mind. These mantras are gentle places to start.

  1. Om (ॐ)

    ॐ

Why: A single sound with a long humming exhale — the simplest calming practice there is.

When: Morning or before the evening story — 5 to 11 slow repetitions, sitting comfortably.

  2. Gayatri Mantra

Why: A steady, rhythmic prayer for a clear mind; its fixed metre makes breathing even.

When: Traditionally at sunrise. Many mothers chant it 3, 11 or 108 times as part of a morning ritual.

  3. Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah (Shanti Mantra)

Why: A wish for everyone's wellbeing that softens worry by turning attention outward.

When: A gentle close to the evening ritual, after the story.

  4. Vishnu Sahasranama

Why: Listening to the long, flowing recitation can feel like resting in sound.

When: Traditionally recited in the morning or on Thursdays and Ekadashi. In pregnancy, listening to a recording while resting is a gentle way to take part; recite only the selected verses if the full text feels long.

  5. Garbha Raksha Ambika Stotram (Garbh Raksha Stotra)

Why: Many mothers find that handing their worries to a protective Mother is deeply calming.

When: Many mothers recite it daily from early pregnancy, often in the morning after a bath or before the evening story. Reciting the refrain alone, slowly, is a complete practice on tired days.

How to practise

Sit or lie on your left side. Breathe in for a count of four, then chant on an exhale of six to eight counts. Five minutes is enough. If anxiety is persistent or overwhelming, talk to your doctor — help is available.

Frequently asked questions

Can chanting reduce anxiety in pregnancy?

Slow breathing and calming routines can help many people feel more relaxed. They are not a treatment for anxiety disorders; please speak to your doctor if anxiety affects daily life.

How long should I chant to feel calm?

Five to ten minutes of slow chanting is a good start. Consistency matters more than length.

Which is the easiest calming mantra?

Om. It is a single syllable, easy to learn, and naturally slows the breath.
