Mantras by purpose
Bedtime mantras for better sleep in pregnancy
Sleep often gets harder as pregnancy goes on. A short, repeated bedtime ritual — a story, a soft mantra, a few slow breaths — tells your body it is time to rest.
Reviewed by Garbh Katha editorial team · updated
- Om (ॐ)
ॐ
Why: A few soft rounds of Om, almost a hum, slow the breath before sleep.
When: Morning or before the evening story — 5 to 11 slow repetitions, sitting comfortably.
- Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah (Shanti Mantra)
Why: A peaceful closing verse — 'shanti, shanti, shanti' — that makes a natural end to the day.
When: A gentle close to the evening ritual, after the story.
How to practise
Dim the lights, lie on your side with a pillow between your knees, listen to or read tonight's story, then chant softly three to five times. Keep screens away afterwards.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best position to sleep in during pregnancy?
From the third trimester, the NHS advises going to sleep on your side, as this is linked with a lower risk of stillbirth than sleeping on your back.
Can I chant in bed?
Yes. Lying on your side and chanting very softly, or just listening, is perfectly fine.
What if I still cannot sleep?
Poor sleep is common, but tell your doctor if it is severe, or if you snore heavily, feel low or anxious, or have restless legs.
