The Little Girl Who Rode With the Sun

Week twenty-four is when the small hands inside you are growing real lines on their palms — the lines the world will one day call their own. The story of little Manu is for the part of you that is teaching their hands, gently, how to hold.

Do not pull. Do not pull. Speak to the horse. Speak to your own hands. They are both listening.

In a low palace at the edge of the holy city of Varanasi, when the morning light was still pink and the bells of the river temples were beginning their first slow ringing, a small girl was waiting in the courtyard.

Her name, then, was Manu. She was perhaps five years old. Her hair was tied in two thick braids that bounced when she ran. She was barefoot in the cool dust.

Reflect with your baby

  • What quality in this story would you like your child to carry?
  • Tell your baby, in your own words, what happened and why it matters.
  • Take five slow breaths and imagine your baby hearing it with you.
